Using very basic sharpening tools to sharpen a V-edge folding knife. It is a very basic & simple but fairly effective way of sharpening my V-edge knives. In this case, I’m sharpening my friend’s Spyderco Endura in ZDP-189 steel. The sharpener is just a Fallkniven DC4 whetstone – Diamond Surface on 1 side, Ceramic on the other side. Surely not the best diamond sharpening system, but a portable one. There are other portable diamond sharpeners, but I have not tried them, so I’m stuck with this one, my first and only. Leather strop to finish off. I further repaired the pretty damaged edge at the end of the blade after this video, using the same whetstone. Knife is shaving sharp throughout the cutting edge after the sharpening.
A review of this fantastic knife sharpener I bought for 25 bucks.
Sharpening a knife with a steel is a bit mis-conceiving in that the real purpose of a steel is to straighten or re-align the blades. The proper way to use a steel is to always stroke the knife away from your hand.
These are some good options for compact knife sharpeners that you can take into the woods. They include a Fallkniven DC4, Gerber Pocket sharpener, Leather strop, Lansky multi sharpener and a diamond pen shaped sharpener.
After like a hundred requests I’m compelled to do a sharpening video…maybe more to follow. Using an EZE-LAP Fine Diamond oval shaped diamond sharpener (Knivesplus.com, EZ-D10F, ) and a 13″ Lansky sharpening steel, I show how I re-sharpen an AG Russell kitchen knife. Keep your edge angle very consistent on both rods, using enough passes to bring out the edge you desire. The diamond stone actually produces micro serrations in the steel which will cut very effectively. I find the edge is more durable and even sharper however if honed a bit on the steel, using care not to roll the tip (in video). I do use other systems occasionally but this is my current favorite. That’s because this is the fastest way I’m able to bring out an edge again in a knife. Note: Suppliers and models of the referenced sharpeners will change. I note my original sources for reference and to maybe help save you time.
