Sharpening my kitchen knives?

How much should i expect to pay to have them sharpened? Can all of the knives in my block be sharpened, or only the ones without serated edges? thank you

Depends on the place and the sharpener person skill.
Most of the guys who do sharpening for money run around with tormek or similar machine at best, at worst with a grinder and honestly, I’d never give a good kitchen knife to them. Average price is 3$-5$ per knife.

There’s a few real pros on the internet, sharpening knives for demanding customers, that runs about 40$ per blade or higher, depends on the blade steel, blade length etc.
Your best bet strangely enough is local barbershop. Good scissors easily run 200-300$ and given that they as usual know someone who’s really good with sharpening. So, you can ask them if you want to go local.

As for the serrations, depends ontheir width and depth. Wider ones can be sharpened, no big deal, I sharpen my bread knives regularly, something like this is easy – http://zknives.com/knives/kitchen/ktknv/misc/gudebk320.shtml
Needle tooth serratins can’t be properly sharpened, I mean knives like this – http://zknives.com/knives/kitchen/ktknv/misc/gudeck160.shtml
One can actually sharpen only back side couple times, it’ll make them sharper, but eventualluy, the serrations will be removed completely…

Other than that, doing it yourself if highly recommended. Although, I wouldn’t advise buying a plastic handled sharpening stick. Beginners have hard time keeping the fixed angle even on the stationary stone, let alone adding variables from the hand held, small stick or even a large sharpening rod. You’ll be disappointed.

The best and cheapest method to start sharpening yourself and that is very nocive friendly is sandpaper + mousepad. It’s as simple as that. Get an old mousepad, 2-3 different grit sandpaper, rough, medium, fine and go ahead. Eventhough Ihave over 2K worth sharpening stones and systems still use that method for certainknives or when I am in a hurry… Details and hints here – http://zknives.com/knives/articles/sandpapermousepad.shtml

You might only need a sharpener. It is a plastic handle with a couple carbide blades in it. You just act like you are trying to cut it and it makes a new edge. You can do this many times before taking them to professional

Jekin’s right…you can do this and do it very, very well.

Go to your local full service hardware store and get a plastic handled knife sharpener, it has a flat stone on it. Serated knives are saws for foods, the blades should never need a sharpening if cared for. Even well warn bread knives should last for over 20 years before they need help. These are usually replaced and if sharpened, require a "RAT TAIL" hone!

Buy a good knife sharpener from a hardware shop. You must select a good one and pay accordingly
